Designing images takes time, and as a GXT member, you will be expected to participate in taking on image requests. If you have a busy schedule, you may want to reconsider joining. As students, we understand that some days , or even weeks, are more busy than others, but if you generally have a busy schedule, joining might not be such a good idea.
That said, we are rather lenient and flexible. As long as you take a few image requests each week, you should be fine. On average, a request could take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, and rarely over that. With larger requests, such as designing a website logo, you will have help as we sometimes assign multiple GXT members to more complex requests. Expect to be doing graphic design at least an hour each week if you do join.
Aside from the graphic design itself, you will be expected to keep up on the forum. For example, answering questions users may have and responding to your clients in a timely fashion. Overall, you would be spending at least two hours each week on GXS.
Although we don't expect you to be a professional graphic designer, you will need to have some skill before joining, which most times entails experience. When you submit your application, you will be asked to provide several pieces of your previous work. These works play a big part in your approval - after all, a picture is a thousand words, right?
If you're new to graphic design and want to learn more, we do have an intern program. Applying for internship at GXS requires much less than appling for the GXT, as we expect interns to be new to the scene. That said, the two other requirements are still in effect - time and resources, which will be covered next.
By this we mean do you have the necessary software to do graphic design, such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Fireworks. GIMP and Paint. NET, free graphics editors, are also options. Whatever your graphics editor, you will need to have a decently up-to-date version. For example, we prefer that you have Adobe Photoshop CS (version 8) or newer. For free products, such as GIMP, this shouldn't be too big of a problem.
Lastly, if you have not yet purchased a graphics editor, we recommend Adobe Photoshop CS2 or CS3. From experience, we can say that is it most fit for the job. It is, however, the most expensive too. Make sure you check out our Graphics Editors Comparison before making a decision.
